-Do you have experience with kids?

-Do you want kids?

-Are you open to moving?

-What’s your opinion on how a couple should share and divide their finances?

These alone-time meetings were more about discovering a click, a spark, letting their guard down without cameras around. From there, the questions could emerge or not. Whatever. Instead, Bree and Marsha had tepid conversations about the weather, life in the contestants’ house and other mundane issues.

Bree didn’t want the same thing to happen with Izzy. “Signs!” Bree said, grabbing the pen and writing a flurry of words.

Pretty

Fun

Silly

Crazy

Sleep

Good

Bad

Friends

Yes

No

Izzy showed Bree each sign in a polite and professional manner, and Bree’s heart sank. Izzy had given up on Bree just like Bree gave up on her. Hey, it didn’t have to be a problem. They’d addressed it on their wilderness date. They were friends. They’d help each other out. Quid pro quo.

If only Bree didn’t feel so guilty about it.

She pointed to herself then to Izzy. “Friends?” she signed, interlacing her pointer fingers.

A genuine grin from Izzy. “Yes. Friends.”

“Pretty,” Bree signed, pointing to Izzy. You’re pretty.

Color on Izzy’s cheeks. Bree liked the flustered reaction.

Izzy pointed to Bree and made the “Y” handshape in front of her nose. You’re silly.

Bree shrugged and pointed to herself. She made the signs for bad, crazy and silly.

“Yes,” Izzy replied.

Okay, they’d run out of words. Bree wrote, “Tell me something you’d wait to share until the fourth or fifth date.”

“Why? This isn’t a date.”

“Come on. We need something interesting to talk about,” Bree wrote.

Izzy arched her eyebrow. “Then you tell me something you’d hold back.”

Fair enough. Bree considered it a moment and went with the riskiest of revelations. “I’ve slept with 20 women in the past year. It’s been extremely empowering but it also leaves me empty.”

Bree could see the surprise in Izzy’s eyes—twenty women! Whoa! But surprise was all it seemed to be, not judgment.

“The show cast you knowing that?” Izzy asked.

“Not quite. My mother-in-law filled out the application. She put down zero sex partners in the past year because he didn’t know any better. They’ve been quick and discreet encounters. Five minutes here, fifteen minutes there. A different woman each time. I never got their names.”

Izzy’s surprise turned to admiration. “You are brave.”

Bree had to smile. “Not brave. Just horny and bored and lonely but not desperate enough to date.”

Confusion on Izzy’s face. “You don’t want to date? Why are you the lead?”

“I stumbled into it. Marguerite applied for me to be a contestant, and the timing was right after Cleo dropped out. I found myself as the lead, and it’s made me feel like a fraud. The show picked me because my application said I was looking for love, and they dropped Cleo because she wasn’t genuine about getting married. At least with Cleo, the contestants would have more fun and get to date an actress.”

“You don’t plan to propose?”

Bree sighed. “I probably will because it’s what I am expected to do, and I am keeping my mind open. I mean, I’d love to fall in in love—of course.
